It has been an exciting spring for ULI New York and we hope you have had the opportunity to attend one of our many sold-out programs. Last week, ULI honored 2013 Real Estate Legend: Bruce Ratner and members got the unique opportunity to see Mr. Ratner discuss his life and achievements with renowned journalist, Greg David. We are also excited to welcome a new Chairman and Executive Director and hope you will join us in welcoming them at the ULI New York Summer Social on June 19.

Bruce Ratner Shares Insight with ULI New York

On May 8, ULI New York celebrated the life, accomplishments and invaluable commitment to the City of New York that are Bruce Ratner's legacy as the 2013 Real Estate Legend. Greg David, an award-winning columnist and former editorial director for Crain's New York Business moderated [Read more] this dynamic discussion with the iconic developer and owner.

With decades in the real estate industry, Mr. Ratner discussed his experiences, both positive and negative, leading up to his current role as Executive Chairman of Forest City Ratner Companies (FCRC). Mr. David highlighted a career full of achievements and innovative projects, including Barclays Center, the B2 building, which will be the world's tallest tower built using modular construction techniques when completed, Brooklyn's MetroTech Center, New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street and the New York Times building.

New York Welcomes a new Chairman and Executive Director

Robert C. Lieber, Executive Managing Director at C-III Capital Partners and former New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, has been named the 2013-2014 ULI New York Chairman. [Read more] He will be joined by his former Chief of Staff, Felix A. Campa who will assume the role of ULI New York Executive Director. Mr. Lieber will be assuming the position in June 2013, when current Chairman and Chief Operating Officer at Benenson Capital Partners, LLC, Richard A. Kessler completes his term.

The Women's Leadership Initiative Sold-Out Inaugural Program Features an Update from the NYCEDC

ULI New York hosted special guest, Miriam Harris on the morning of April 24 at Shearman & Sterling, Attendees were brought up to date on the latest projects from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). [Read more] Ms. Harris, Senior Vice President of Real Estate Transactions at NYCEDC, spoke about her work, particularly her involvement as the Real Estate Lead for the Cornell University Tech Campus on Roosevelt Island. The presentation featured over 25 active projects spearheaded by Ms. Harris, including the current Seward Park Mixed-Use Development RFP for over 1.5 million square feet of new development on the Lower East Side, The Applied Sciences Project which led to the successful designation of Cornell University & the Technion of Israel to develop an approximately 2 million square foot graduate engineering campus Roosevelt Island as well as the 62 acre Willets Point Project in Queens. Ellen Sinreich, Chair of the WLI Program Committee, discussed the goals and mission of WLI prior to introducing Ms. Harris.

ULI New York Explores How New Technologies are effecting the CRE Industry

As technology evolves at a rapid rate, no industry remains unaffected. On the evening of May 9, the Young Leaders Group, in partnership with Sustainable Building Council, hosted 'Appy Hour and addressed how emerging digital interfaces are changing the commercial real estate industry. [Read more]

The speed of transactions is accelerating and innovative technologies are facilitating new decision making practices. Representatives from several evolving tech companies examined how their apps are putting more power in the hands of real estate leaders and game changers. Attendees watched rapid-fire demos presented by Honest Buildings, Bright Power, ResiModel, Code Green and Wegowise.
